Silver Diamine Fluoride (SDF)
Silver Diamine Fluoride (SDF) is a non-invasive treatment option for cavities (caries), using a topical medicine that is painted on the tooth, to prevent them from increasing in size and spreading. It can be used as an alternative to a more invasive surgical (drill and fill) approach.
It is important to note that the preferred method to treat and arrest decay is by removing the decay and taking restorative measures such as fillings or crowns, but it may be the case that these standard methods are not always readily available or viable. In these cases, SDF provides an alternative solution to slowing or stopping decay in its tracks.
SDI (SDF + KI)
Riva Star (SDI) combines the application of SDF followed by potassium iodide (KI) to dental caries that prevents staining by scavenging free silver ions.
Silver: Silver compounds are used as an anti microbial agent
Fluoride: Works as a bacteriostatic effect to prevent the further demineralization of tooth structure
Water: Provides a liquid base for the compound
Ammonia (Solvent): Allows the solution to remain concentrated so that it’s most effective
Iodide: Potassium Iodide used in conjunction with SDF provides a powerful antimicrobial effect as well as reducing potential staining of teeth.
